Refugees, asylum seekers and migrants often flee their home countries with no possessions. In Coventry, many face extreme poverty. With £100,000 from the npower Business Solutions (nBS) Foundation, Carriers of Hope is creating homes for them with pre-loved items.

Since 2009, Carriers of Hope has been taking donations of second-hand furniture and other household items from the local community and using it to create safe, comfortable homes for displaced people in Coventry. More than this, it offers practical support, opportunities and access to vital services to families in deprived circumstances.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone behind the nBS Foundation. We have a fantastic team here on the ground who wouldn’t be here without this funding.

The charity’s team, which includes five former asylum seekers and refugees, coordinates the collection and donation of essentials, saving 44,440 litres of waste from going to landfill. It then redistributes these to families when they’re placed in permanent homes. However, the organisation’s work was at risk due to a lack of sustainable funding.

With a grant from the nBS Foundation, the team could stay and help the charity expand its furniture and recycling projects, with the potential to help 1,700 vulnerable families. Alongside reducing waste, this will help create secure, restful homes from which people can progress their lives.
