To encourage its pupils to have higher aspirations, King Edward VI Balaam Wood Academy needed funding for a new school bus. An npower Business Solutions (nBS) Foundation grant enabled this to happen, opening up experiences beyond the classroom.

King Edward VI Balaam Wood Academy is a secondary school in a disadvantaged area of Birmingham. Dedicated to providing a safe and caring learning environment where every child is nurtured and motivated to reach their full potential, its ‘brighter futures’ project was designed to increase pupils’ cultural capital.

To get classes to and from these opportunities, the school needed transport. The nBS Foundation provided £90,000 to fund a new electric minibus, which will drive the school's commitment to sustainability and enhance the lives of its pupils and their families.

“The big difference will be that we can, free of charge, get our pupils to activities, trips and residentials.”

Damian McGarvey, Headteacher of King Edward VI Balaam Wood Academy

Following the school’s values of ‘bold, ambitious, collaborative and kindness’, the bus will be used to help the children overcome social issues and open new doors.

Simon Mitchell, Head of Deal Support and Contracts said:

“We chose to support this project because it was a fantastic application that aligns with everything we want to do with the nBS Foundation, including helping to build stronger communities. I’m optimistic this will help broaden the horizons of the students and I’m really proud we have been able to help with that.”
