I’ve met many Energy Managers who thrive on data, and their ability to capture, analyse and act from it can deliver huge savings for their organisations.

But for many, the topic of business energy data and metering sadly isn’t prioritised as that important, let alone vital to their bottom line.

Yet, with energy costs perceived as a keen area of concern – and the top risk identified by around 40% of businesses* – I’m always surprised by this.

The key to reducing costs

Your energy data – and the meters used to capture this – should allow you to understand exactly how, where and when you use energy.

And it’s this insight that holds the key to cutting waste and reducing how much you spend on this fundamental – but increasingly expensive – resource.

That’s why my team has produced a guide to understanding data and metering services – what they are and how to ensure you get what’s right for your business.

Impact of Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS)

We also look at the impact of MHHS, which is major reform being instigated by Ofgem – and how this will impact data and metering for every consumer.

A huge UK-wide migration programme is currently under way to settle every meter on a half-hourly basis – which means, regardless of current meter type, you will be allocated 48 data points in every 24-hour period by July 2027.

Deciding how to receive and manage this data is therefore a key business decision.

Whereas currently, many businesses will just go with whatever metering services their supplier provides or advises, MHHS will mean that every business will need to take a more active role in this process.

Consider a switch from dumb meters to dynamic meters

While physical meter upgrades aren’t within the scope of MHHS for existing Non-Half Hourly (NHH) meters, if you have these traditional ‘dumb’ meters in your portfolio, you may want to consider switching to Automated Meter Reading (AMR) or Half-Hourly (HH) meters before MHHS comes into force.

That way you can benefit from the enhanced data and metering services MHHS will deliver.

Our guide explains the changes

All these new developments provide the ideal opportunity to benefit from enhanced data awareness. And not just more accurate energy invoices – but also far greater data insight that can facilitate savings, carbon reduction and support energy-efficiency investments.
