Demand Flexibility Service (DFS)
Where operational flexibility creates commercial value
The way you use electricity is changing. With DFS, your business can earn revenue by reducing or shifting electricity demand during flexibility events.
npower Business Solutions is a registered participant in the National Energy System Operator (NESO) Demand Flexibility Service.
What is DFS?
DFS rewards businesses for temporarily reducing or shifting electricity consumption during periods when flexibility is needed across the energy system.
Why demand flexibility matters?
Rather than relying solely on additional generation at peak times, businesses can play an active role in creating a smarter, more efficient energy system.
Is DFS right for your business?
To participate, you will need:
- 1A Half-Hourly (HH) electricity meter.
- 2Suitable demand flexibility.
- 3The ability to respond to flexibility requests at short notice.
- 4An npower Business Solutions (nBS) electricity supply contract, or be contracting with us at the same time.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Is DFS right for your business?
DFS is typically suitable for businesses with Half-Hourly (HH) electricity meters that can temporarily reduce, increase or shift electricity demand when flexibility is needed, without impacting critical business operations.
Do I have to participate in every event?
No. Participation is completely voluntary. Signing up to DFS simply gives you access to potential flexibility opportunities; it does not commit you to taking part in every event. Before any event is submitted on your behalf, we'll contact you to confirm whether you'd like to participate, allowing you to decide at the time.
When do events usually take place?
Opportunities can arise throughout the year but are typically more frequent during the winter months, when grid demand is at its highest.
How much can my business earn?
Payments depend on the volume of flexibility offered, the price achieved and the performance delivered during events.
Can businesses with battery storage participate?
Yes. Battery storage can often be used to support participation in DFS, subject to a suitability assessment.
How are payments calculated?
Payments are based on the demand reduction delivered during an event, measured against an agreed baseline.
When are payments made?
Payments are typically processed within 10 weeks of an event.
Do I need to be an nBS supply customer?
Yes. DFS is available to customers with an nBS electricity supply contract, or customers agreeing a supply contract as part of the onboarding process.
