Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS)
MHHS is a major programme, sponsored by Ofgem, which will allow energy suppliers to settle electricity consumption for all meters on a half-hourly basis.
The aim is to facilitate a more accurate and timelier picture of energy usage for every consumer – as well as the wider industry. This insight will support the development of a smarter and more flexible energy system as we transition to net zero.
Suppliers and meter operators started transitioning customer electricity meters in October 2025, with the majority migrating between May 2026 and May 2027.
Why is MHHS being introduced?
The main aim of the MHHS programme is to gain more timely insight into how much electricity is being used by consumers, and when, based on Half-Hourly (HH) data provided by modern meters. This will help generators, suppliers and consumers can better understand, forecast and generate the volume of power the UK needs.
According to industry regulator Ofgem, this will then unlock "flexibility to support the transition to net zero" and "contribute to a more cost-effective electricity system, encouraging more flexible use of energy and helping consumers lower their bills."
What does MHHS mean for your business?
For business consumers, the impact of MHHS will depend on the types of meter you have and the energy-related products and services you currently receive. But the aim is to facilitate greater data insight that will support more effective energy management and provide more opportunities to save money.
You do not need to do anything, as your supplier will initiate and complete the MHHS migration process. And while meter replacements are not a requirement of MHHS, there may be exceptions where your supplier needs to visit your site(s) and potentially exchange some of your meters. If this is the case for any npower Business Solutions (nBS) customers, we will be in touch first to let you know
What does MHHS mean for your meters?
As part of the migration, your meters may end up in different meter service segments:
- Half-Hourly (HH) and Automated Meter Reading (AMR) meters will come under the Advanced segment, requiring an Advanced Data Service (ADS) and Metering Service (Advanced) (MSA) agent.
- Smart meters will come under the Smart segment and will need a Smart Data Service (SDS) and Metering Service (Smart) (MSS) agent.
All non-domestic consumers are advised to appoint the appropriate metering service agent and data services agent, or you can allow your supplier to make the appointment on your behalf.
If we are your supplier and you do not have a Smart or AMR meter and we continue to supply you using a traditional meter, we will keep using meter readings from yourself, or agents working on your behalf, to ensure you continue to receive accurate invoices.
To arrange a free meter exchange to either a Smart or AMR meter, please get in touch.
When will the changes happen?
The MHHS migrations started in October 2025, with the majority happening in the 12 months from May 2026, with full industry-wide migration expected to be complete by May 2027.
We will get in touch with our customers to make sure you are kept informed of our migration timetable. Every meter will be migrated regardless of type, and we will include a list of all the affected meters when appropriate.
If you are an nBS customer, please rest assured that we will contact you ahead of any changes.
