Shifting the UK electricity industry to a system of Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) has been a long-term aspiration for industry regulator Ofgem.

But it took until the 2020s to set in motion a timeline to bring MHHS to reality. And now, after several years of intensive activity behind the scenes, MHHS is finally getting ready to go live (albeit in stages).

The new technical platforms, industry code and the organisations responsible for making half-hourly settlement happen are all set to become operational from 22 September.

At the same time, our Data and Metering Services (DMS) team will become one of the first fully-accredited MHHS metering service providers for Advanced (ie Half-Hourly and AMR) meters and the data these meters generate.

In technical MHHS speak (and there is rather a lot of this), this means we tick the boxes for both Metering Service Advanced (MSA) and Advanced Data Service (ADS) functions.

Supporting consumer MHHS journeys

Our DMS team have qualified with a small handful of other meter agents and energy suppliers as part of an advance cohort, ahead of the rest of the industry.

We have been supported with new meter operating technology by our super-able partner Wheatley Software Solutions.

This means that from October, we can start to provide the new metering services every business will have to have in place once their supplier becomes MHHS qualified.

And while MHHS means the way metering data is gathered, verified and settled is more intensive and streamlined than currently, our DMS team have decades of
experience of providing first-class metering services.

We are proud to be known in the industry for our high standards of customer service and data accuracy. And when both MSA and ADS services are taken together, we will provide all-inclusive prices that mean there’s no extra to pay
when meters need repairing or replacing.

So if we don’t currently provide your metering services, do get in touch if you’d like to find out how we can support your MHHS transition, no matter how your meter portfolio is organised. We can also help you to utilise half-hourly data to gain valuable insight to maximise energy efficiency and reduce cost.

We've worked closely with the nBS team from the outset of MHHS plans to ensure that the Wheatley Sapphire meter operations solution is ready for the roles of MSA (and MSS), and to ensure that the rigorous testing necessary for qualification was completed to the standard and deadlines required by the programme.

Everyone at Wheatley has really appreciated the open and collaborative way nBS has approached our working relationship, and this has made the effort and challenges of meeting MHHS requirements an exciting and rewarding journey for us to be part of.

Suppliers getting ready

While most suppliers won’t get the green light to migrate to the new MHHS metering arrangements until next year, some – like our sister organisation E.ON Next – will also qualify in September, and so are preparing to start migrating their customers from October.

When it comes to our nBS supply customers, we’ll start migrating meters onto the new metering arrangements from May 2026 onwards, after our supplier qualification date, which is scheduled for Spring 2026.

Finally, MHHS is a complex project, so if you have any questions or want to understand more about it, do visit our MHHS hub.
