Helping a Leeds primary school embrace outdoor learning Deighton-Gates-primary-school-logo Deighton Gates Primary School in Wetherby wanted an inclusive and accessible outdoor learning centre. A £5,750 grant from the npower Business Solutions (nBS) Foundation made open air learning and community events possible, whatever the weather.

A vibrant place of learning, Deighton Gates Primary School educates and empowers 210 children, and knows that outdoor learning is important to wellbeing. While the school has a large outdoor area, there was little in the way of shelter. When it rained, outdoor learning opportunities were limited and after-school clubs and activities such as forest school had to be cancelled.

The school’s new shelter is made entirely from sustainable materials and has created an environment that’s accessible for everyone, removing barriers that might stop children from playing and learning outside. Whether it’s teaching whole classes or running dedicated storytelling sessions, the shelter means teachers and students are able to spend longer periods of the day outdoors, in all seasons.

Anthony Ainsworth, Chief Operating Officer at nBS commented: “Seeing the new outdoor learning facilities at Deighton Gates Primary School become a reality makes me very proud. Knowing that current and future students will grow up embracing the outdoors, and learning to love and protect nature, means we’re playing a small part in helping to raise environmentally-conscious adults.”
