Markets close mixed as LNG flows improve despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Gas and power

Power and gas markets closed mixed yesterday as reports of increased LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz provided some comfort around near-term LNG availability. Four LNG vessels reportedly transited the strait over the weekend, helping to ease concerns over supply security. However, the situation remains uncertain, and current transit levels may not be sustainable amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Elsewhere, the US Freeport LNG facility is expected to increase feedgas intake following an outage last Friday, easing concerns over a prolonged disruption and further improving the LNG supply picture.

Adjacent markets

Oil prices edged higher on Monday as markets remained cautious amid a lack of meaningful diplomatic progress towards reinstating the Memorandum of Understanding between the US and Iran. While reports indicate that crude export volumes have recovered to pre conflict levels, prices remain elevated due to the increased risks and logistical complexities associated with transporting energy supplies through the region. The euro fell to a 17 month low against the US dollar following last week's bond market sell off, as renewed concerns over France’s budget deficit raised questions about fiscal sustainability within the eurozone.
